The discrepancy between the country and city devil was observed by Francis Barrett, professor of chemistry, natural and occult philosophy at London, who published in 1801 his famous book. The Magus. In this, he undertakes to restore to the rulers of hell their true shape, in an epoch highly conscious of the changes which history has wrought. Thus Barrett despoiled the devils of all the embellishments with which they had been adorned by various eras. For this reformatory enterprise Barrett went to the trouble of drawing the correct outlines of certain demons who had attracted his interest. He depicts Asmodeus as a short-nosed and sharp-toothed fellow and Theutus as a singularly good-natured Anglo-Saxon who hides his small chin behind a voluminous beard. The lascivious Incubus, however, has a keen and rather disconcerting grin which might have deeply impressed Barrett's female students to whom he used to lecture on the Cabala and ceremonial magic.
